The "2020 Business Environment Report on 296 Cities at the Prefecture Level and Above" was released by the Academy of Greater Bay Area Studies and the 21st Century Economic Institute on December 21. Zhongshan ranked 36th among the top 200 business environments in China.

The report showed that cities in the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta regions enjoy the best business environment. Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Nanjing topped the list. Hefei, Suzhou, Wuxi, Zhuhai, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, and other cities performed well and these cities are expected to improve in the next few years.

Six dimensions were used to calculate business environment, including soft environment, infrastructure, social service, total market volume, business cost, and ecological environment.

Zhongshan ranked 28th in the soft environment index. In terms of market vitality, Zhongshan ranked high in several sub-indicators. For example, at the end of 2019, Zhongshan has 121 market entities for every one thousand people, and the figure ranked 18th nationwide.

In the infrastructure index, Guangzhou, Jinhua, Dongguan, Shenzhen, Jiayuguan, Zhongshan, Urumqi, Beijing, Zhuhai and Xi'an ranked in the top 10 in terms of the ratio of mobile phones to permanent residents. In terms of ecological environment index, Zhongshan ranked 52nd.
