On the morning of September 22 , Zhongshan Radio and Television University was renamed officially as Zhongshan Open University. Director of Municipal Propaganda Department Fang Weiting, Secretary of the Party Committee of The Open University of Guangdong Fang Jianzhuang and Deputy Mayor Xu Xiaoli attended the inauguration.

It is reported that the rename is an important achievement of Guangdong’s promoting regional radio and television universities transformation and developing open universities system. In July 2012, the Open University of China was established. Since 2015, Guangdong provincial government, provincial department of education and The Open University of Guangdong started jointly to promote regional radio and TV universities’ transformation to open universities. In August this year, Zhongshan Radio and Television University was approved to change its name to “Zhongshan Open University”.
