The Nansha Bridge, previously named "Humen Second Bridge," officially opened to traffic on Tuesday after more than 5 years of construction.

The bridge has a total length of 12.89 kilometers, with a designed speed limit of 100km/h. It will shorten the distance from southern Guangzhou to Dongguan by about 10 kilometers, and the driving time by about half an hour.

Peng Kejun, who lives in Dongguan and works in Zhongshan, was the first citizen to step onto the newly opened bridge. He said the Nansha Bridge will be another convenient option for him when he commutes between Dongguan and Zhongshan.

The Nansha Bridge is expected to relieve the traffic pressure across the Pearl River Estuary. For Zhongshan citizens, it will be an easier route to travel from Zhongshan to Dongguan while avoiding the crowded Humen Bridge.

Daily traffic volume over the Nansha Bridge is forecast to exceed 60,000 vehicles during the upcoming Tomb Sweeping Day holidays.

The fee for traveling over the bridge is 42 yuan.
