Continuous rains kept Hengmen community, a seaside fishing village in Zhongshan, more quiet for the past few days. In Shun's Food Store standing next to the Hengmen Fitness Square, the post-80s store owner Liang Shunkai and his father were enjoying their leisure time after the busy afternoon session.

Wang Zhengjiang, another fisherman in Hengmen, had been learning fishing skills from his father since childhood. But a few years ago, he left Hengmen and the leisure fishery industry, and he joined the Zhongshan Port & Shipping Group as a transport mariner.

Different from their elder generations, the new generation of fishermen like Liang and Wang had left the sea and gone ashore.

Presently, there are over 2,300 registered residents in Hengmen community, most of which are fishermen, said Huang Zhiwei, Deputy Secretary of the community Party branch. These people came originally from Xiaolan, Huangpu and Minzhong towns when the fishing commune was established at that time. They settled down in the fishing village and made a living as fishermen.

Since the founding of Hengmen community (village), they have been through two industrial transformations. Until now, only more than 100 of them are still engaged in fishing industry. The others had gone ashore to do part-time jobs, run restaurants, or take a job in factories or enterprises.
