There are only about 3,400 registered residents in Nanlang Town's Yakou Village in Zhongshan, with a per capita cultivation area of about 0.67 hectares and abundant agricultural resources. In recent years, Yakou Village has utilized its resources to develop rural experience tours, which attract a large number of tourists.

The first farmland experience tour after the Spring Festival was organized in Yakou Village on February 21 and demonstrated the value of rural experience tours.

At about 10 am, Tan Ruiquan, a 65-year-old villager, and his family stood on their farm and waited for the first guests. After a while, Tan Jinkun, secretary of the village Party branch and director of the Yakou Village committee, came with more than 70 tourists.

Children and adults were divided into three groups. They excitedly waved hoes, shovels and spades, readying to dig up potatoes. Tan Ruiquan and his family showed them how to dig up potatoes and weighed the potatoes for tourists.

"With the development of urbanization, children are getting farther away from farmlands. Many children only know the pleasure of shopping malls and amusement parks, but know nothing about nature. I think exposure to the countryside is necessary to cultivate children's interest in nature as early as possible," said a parent who participated in the activity.

After only wo hours of work in the morning, the villagers sold more than 450 kilograms of potatoes.

In Yakou Village, 2,000-mu (about 133.3 hectares) of fields are used for rice cultivation, 30,000 mu (2,000 hectares) are used for aquaculture, 50 mu (3.3 hectares) for potatoes, and 50 mu (3.3 hectares) for other vegetables. Various experience tours are hosted to meet the needs of urbanites wanting to get close to nature and experience rural life.

Tan Jinkun said that Yakou Village utilizes its rich farming culture to carry out rural experience tours, which has opened up a new, profitable avenue for agricultural development.
