The 4th-generation garbage classification system adopting face recognition technology developed by the Zhongshan-based ZHS will come into use in late June and hopefully facilitate citizens in classified garbage disposal.

Cheng Dongyun, Vice President of ZHS, indicated that now many garbage sorting facilities are equipped with QR code device. However, QR code scanning is inconvenient for the elderly who do garbage classification and recycling work in most families.

With the face recognition-based system developed by ZHS, people will find the operating process of garbage sorting much simpler. By scanning their faces, old people can dispose garbage by category and gain reward points.

"ZHS has also set up a data monitoring platform to track and analyze citizens' garbage disposal behavior. On detecting a household with lower classification accuracy, ZHS will send special staff to provide instructions in order to improve accuracy," Cheng Dongyun added.

So far, Zhongshan is only capable of handling over 3,000 tons of household garbage per day, with a large capability gap. Garbage classification can not only turn "waste" into wealth but also relieve the pressure on refuse disposal.

By the end of the first quarter this year, over 1,600 government departments, public institutions and functional places in Zhongshan have involved in garbage classification.
