According to Zhongshan Customs, in the first 8 months of this year, Zhongshan exported more than 600 tonnes of mooncakes, worth about 47 million yuan, to over 40 countries and regions.

"We started preparing for exports in April. Our export orders have grown further this year compared with last year, and in addition to European countries, we have expanded into Ecuador," said Ou Ruiqiong, quality control director at food company Sovereign Emperor.

Chinese people are the main consumers in overseas markets, and in addition to traditional mooncakes, innovative varieties such as low-sugar and lightly salted ones are gaining popularity, Ou added.

The Zhongshan mooncake, with a history of nearly a century, has been exporting for over 60 years, making it one of the most representative types of Cantonese mooncakes.
