Zhongshan's consumer price index (CPI) maintained a modest growth rate for 2018. According to the data provided by the Zhongshan investigation team of the National Bureau of Statistics, the city's CPI rose 1.4% last year. The figure for 2018 is 0.2 percent lower than the 2017 figure.
Generally speaking, food, tobacco and alcohol prices, residential prices, transportation and communication prices were the major contributors of CPI growth, driving it up by 1.2 percent.
Food prices climbed 1.3% in 2018. The prices of eggs, vegetables, and chickens showed noticeable increases of 8.8%, 8.6%, and 4.8%, respectively.
In addition, prices for service items rose 1.3% last year. The growth of service items was closely related to Zhongshan’s residential cost of living. These service costs, such as medical treatment, rental housing, and education, all declined in 2018.
