Starting working on a specially-selected day

After the Spring Festival, people in all walks of life liked to choose a good day to start working. Some of those people might set off fireworks in front of the workplace for celebration. The farmers in mountain areas then inserted incense sticks and candles in the fields to worship the gods before they started to work. They also hoed the fields to indicate an official start of working, and set off firecrackers to imply an auspicious commencement.

Helping neighbors

When farmers living in tidal-flat areas built houses or arranged for weddings and funerals, their relatives and neighbors were usually willing to come to help. At that time, the host families would serve them meals, with no payment involved. 

Fishpond drying

After finishing catching the big fishes and draining the water, the fishpond owners would allow others to go inside to catch the remaining fishes and shrimps.
