A series of showcase activities was recently held to promote the Intangible Cultural Heritage program "The Ma's Spear" at schools in South District.
These activities started this April and lasted 8 months. During this period, Ma Yuquan, the 25th generation inheritor of "The Ma's Spear", visited Maling Primary School, Zhuxiuyuan Central Primary School, Liangdu Middle School and others to participate in 44 activities promoting this ICH program to nearly 1,300 students in total.
"The Ma's Spear" has a long history and was first mentioned in the New Treatise on Military Efficiency by Qi Jiguang. It is one of the important genres in the traditional Chinese martial arts system using the spear. It was created by the Fubo General Ma Yuan during Emperor Guangwu's reign in the Eastern Han Dynasty and has been passed down from generation to generation.
In 2018, "The Ma's Spear" was listed among the seventh batch of municipal Intangible Cultural Heritage programs.
"Participating students all showed their enthusiasm in these activities. We not only teach martial techniques, but we also pass on the strong feelings of nationalism and cultural identity contained in 'The Ma's Spear' to the next generation," said Ma Yuquan.
