With hills at the back and seas in the front, Shenwan Town has so abundant rainfall and fertile land that it is very suitable for growing pineapples. Pineapples grown here are called Shenwan Pineapples. After a long time of seed selection and cultivation, Shanwan Pineapples have been greatly localized and improved, featuring an average weight of 0.5kg, golden yellow color, thin peel and thick pulp, tender and crisp taste, and sweet and refreshing aroma.

There are four ways to eat Shenwan Pineapple. First, remove the peel and directly taste it. There is no need to soak the fruit with salt brine. Second, juice the pineapple. Pineapple juice is a good refreshing drink for summer. Third, cook pineapples with chicken or duck to make a famous cuisine at banquet. Fourth, make pineapple cans for travel.

There were two Shenwan Pineapple varieties. The first one features big fruit but bad taste. Thus, it has not been planted any more. The second one is a new variety named "Jinshan" (i.e. the present Shenwan Pineapple), featuring yellow fruit, small and edible core.

According to Li Heling's Mysterious Pineapples (1988 version), the new variety was taken to China by Li Guohan, a returned overseas Chinese. In the 1920s, Chen Xianggu partnered up with Li Guohan, and Li Can partnered up with his clansman, to grow such new variety of pineapple at the southern foot of Yahuan Mountain. They were the first specialized growers of pineapples there.

In the 1930s, more and more people started to grow pineapples and sold them locally or to Macao. According to the Pearl River Delta Agricultural Records, Shenwan Pineapple was developed by selection and cultivated by Li Guohan's worker during the period from 1934 to 1935.

New Shenwan Pineapple became popular between 1937 and 1939 and was grown by almost every local family, with a planting amount of 2,000 to 10,000.
