On November 27 in Qijiang Park, Zhongshan Vice Mayor Lei Yuelong along with the Honolulu delegation planted a delonix regia tree, which was an commemoration for the 20th anniversary of the establishment of friendly cities relationship between two cities. Relevant commemorating activity was conducted on the same day in Qijiang Park.
On October 10 to 14, 1997, a 150-man delegation from Honolulu, headed by the Mayor Jeremy Harris, visited Zhongshan. On October 13, 1997, Zhongshan and Honolulu City signed an agreement on the establishment of a friendly city relationship.
Honolulu, the capital of the state of Hawaii, is located on Oahu with a population of about 900,000. More than 70% of local overseas Chinese are Zhongshanese people.
Friendship between Honolulu and Zhongshan has been long-standing and well-established. Sun Yat-sen left his footprints here and most of the overseas Chinese residing in Honolulu come from Zhongshan city. In the past 20 years’ time, both cities have carried out cooperation and exchanges in terms of economic trade, culture, education, medical sector, tourism and etc.
