According to the 2021 Zhongshan Reading Development Report released recently, Zhongshan citizens read 18.5 books on average in 2021, seeing a large increase from 2020 (14.2) and 2019 (14.1).
Generally speaking, the 26-45 age group, the female group, and the married with children group read less. People aged 25 and below read the most, reaching an average of 22.3 books a year, people aged 26-45 read 17.2 books on average, and the people aged over 45 group 21.2 books.
Men read 20.5 books on average, significantly higher than that of women (16.5 books).
Unmarried people read 18.3 books on average, lower than that of those married without children (25 books) but higher than those married with children (17.0 books).
With the advent of the digital information age, there are more and more ways to acquire knowledge, but most citizens still enjoy traditional reading. Some 52.8% of the respondents spent more money on paper books last year.
Digital reading has become a new trend. In terms of demographics, the adults aged 26-45, the highly educated and the male groups tended to turn to digital reading.
