Recently, the annual English Week of the Primary School of China (Hong Kong) English School (CHES) was held as scheduled. Students participated in theme learning and activities such as 3D cards, posters, and pop-up books through hands-on making, unlocking cultural and geographical knowledge of various countries in English.
Every class will be in charge of introducing one country, and they'll show their posters to all students.
Campus "English Week": Finding Ways to Get Students to Speak English
CHES encourages students to share their experiences and observations. Not long ago, a third-grade student from Poland walked to the podium and introduced the culture and cuisine of his homeland. Unexpectedly, this sparked great interest among teachers and students: It turned out that Polish culture and art were so rich and fascinating. Additionally, teachers also realized that they knew very little about their colleague Asa's homeland, Armenia. What other countries are there in the world that are not well-known but fascinating? The English Department Head, Ms Liao Lili, introduced that the English teaching team was inspired and immediately set the theme of this year's "English Week" as "Amazing Countries".
Looking at the 2025 English Week activity plan of the Primary School Department, it includes in-class country-themed learning, as well as a theme exhibition of English 3D cards, posters, mind map designs, and pop-up book making, as well as theme knowledge competitions, English poetry recitation, English song and dance performances, and dubbing performances of classic film clips.
Ms Liao introduced that CHES attaches great importance to cultivating students' interests and encouraging the students to learn with curiosities. "Throughout the week, from learning, hands-on activities, listening, writing to speaking, all aspects fully mobilize children's interest in researching the different geographies, histories, and cultures of various countries."
Every student will do a handcraft about a certain country.
The Majority of CHES Primary Students Can Communicate Freely with Foreign Students
Since the mid-1990s, the English Week has been held annually at CHES. "When I came here to teach in 2000, the English Week had already been a regular event every year," said Ms Liao Lili. Over the past 31 years, the school has encouraged children to be confident in communicating in English from an early age to help them build good friendships with foreign students, and students from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao regions of China, which help them to lay a solid language foundation for entering international schools in the middle school stage. "
"Some schools in society offer English classes, but many students who score high marks are 'dumb' and 'deaf' - they know everything about grammar and vocabulary, but they are too afraid to speak and can't understand when others speak in English. Therefore, in the primary school stage, our school organizes various activities and creates various opportunities to encourage children to speak English freely and naturally," Ms Liao Lili further explained. Learning oral English well in the primary school stage lays a solid foundation for students to better accept English listening, speaking, reading and writing in the middle school stage. "Most of the students in our primary school can communicate fluently with foreign students in daily life. Some junior high school students can even get high scores in IELTS and TOEFL tests."
The students performed in groups focusing on a specific country's theme.
