Since the new term starting in September, a new compulsory science course - at least once a week - will be added to the schedule of grade 1 primary students. Previously, primary schools in Zhongshan did not set up science course for students under grade 3.

According to the Education Ministry's latest revised requirement of the Compulsory Education Standard in Elementary Science Curriculum, science course should be opened to grade one primary students since this September on and it is of equal importance as Chinese, maths and other basic courses.

"We have already got the textbook, ready to invite the writers to Zhongshan and give our science teacher a training course in the near future." Feng Yusheng, member of Zhongshan Teaching and Research Office said.

What does science course teach? According to Feng, science textbook in grade one in primary school are divided into four units, starting from the understanding of the things and rules around us.

"The content of the textbook is in line with the cognitive rules of the first-graders, and it's all about the things that are around us." "Feng said.
