The past Mid-Autumn festival was a “real reunion night” for Yang Zhiqian, a 65-year-old from Dachong Town. That night, he fulfilled his father’s last wish and made a video call with his cousin who now lives in Singapore.

Yang Shaoxi, born in 1911, and his younger brother Yang Biaodong lost their parents when they were young. When they grew up, Yang Shaoxi went to Yan’an, but Yang Biaodong moved to Malaysia to make a living. Since 1936, the separated brothers could only keep in touch by letter.

In 1963, Yang Biaodong passed away. His family were told to send some remains and photos back to home country. However, concerning “overseas relationships” issue, Yang Shaoxi decided to hide the letters and things in silence with no reply. From then on, Yang Shaoxi lost contact with his younger brother’s family.

“My father expressed his regret before he died in 2000. He hoped we can find my uncle’s offspring.” Over a decade, Yang Zhiqian, son of Yang Shaoxi, has been looking for his relatives calling on friends.

With the assistance of Zhongshan overseas Chinese affairs department and Zhongshan natives association in Malaysia, Yang Zhiqian finally got the contact information of his uncle’s descendants.

On the night of Mid-autumn Festival this year, Yang Zhiqian made a video call with his uncle’s oldest daughter, the 70-year-old cousin, for the first time. “We are now reunited.” Yang Zhiqian said.
