Xiangshan locates at the marine outfall of the Pearl River. From the middle period of the Ming dynasty to before liberation days, people suffered from bandits frequently. Year after year, besides the war and the effects of natural disasters, people generally had the desire for peace and tranquility. This kind of mentality is shown in the street names of village such as Taiping Circle, Taiping Village, Taiping Street and Taiping Road.

Huangpu Town and Nantou Town both have a nature village called Taiping Village. The former village was opened in the middle of the Ming dynasty, Liang moved here from Dongguan. People from Shunde moved to latter one in the Qing dynasty, which was one of the anti-Japanese bases in Zhongshan.

Xiaolan, which is on the northwest of Zhongshan, has Taiping Straight Street, Taiping East Street and Taiping West Road at the foot of Fengshan Park and the residential area behind Jiaokou Primary School. Taiping West Street, 170 meters long, has the same trend with number “7”. On one side of the wall is covered with cartoons of Xiaolan’s cultural heritage.

Dongsheng Taiping Village was listed as the first batch of Green Villages by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-rural Development (14 provinces and regions) this year. It administers five nature villages, Dongxing, Nanning, Xicheng, Beihe and Zhongwang. The history of the five natural villages can be traced back to the late Yuan and early Ming dynasty. People began to settle down here in the early Jiaqing period of Qing dynasty. They were called Taiping No.1 village, No.2 village, No.3 village, No.4 village and No.5 village, respectively. However, no matter how the names change, they have always been part of “Taiping”. In the village, the Ersheng Temple with the red walls are historical sites. Sandu Water-gate, which was listed as non-movable cultural relics of Zhongshan, also witnessed the changes of Taiping village.

As for the Taiping Road in the urban area, Shiqi people have too many memories. This 1.18-kilometer-long and semicircular old street is a complex landmark and a special existence.

Actually, Taiping Road has two brothers called Taiping Lane and Taiping Alley. The former one, 137 meters long, starts from Taiping Road on the north and connects to Basha Street on the south. The old residential buildings on both sides have been empty. The latter one which is a 15-meter-long derivative alley, is sandwiched between Taiping Road and Taiping Lane.

Taiping Road is just like an old man. The back door of the Worker’s Cultural Hall is diagonally across Zhongshan Department Store. According to Zhongshan Federation of Trade Unions, the Workers' Cultural Hall was built and opened in the Spring Festival of 1955. Its back door on Taiping Road was opened in 1968, along with the Home for Retired Workers.

Last summer, a news about the demolition of a nearly 500-year-old temple on Taiping Road drew public attention. Actually, it refers to the Guandi Temple which is one of Shiqi "Four Ancient Temples". As for the temple culture, it is the background color of Taiping road that is different from other old streets. Besides Guandi Temple, various temples such as Huaguang Temple, Kangzhenjun Temple, Beidi Temple and Changtang Ancient Temple were appeared on Taiping Road in succession.

The most representative of Taiping Road is the custom of flower market. Originally, flower market was used to open at Taiping Road. In order to avoid traffic congestion, flower market was move to Xiama Road of Zhongshan Park. Unexpectedly, the business did not go well. The retailer thought that the road was “end road” and difficult to attract people. Finally, the flower market was moved back to Taiping Road. It is not difficult to imagine the bouquets of flowers and piles of brocades in Taiping Road at the end of the year.
