The "Public Solicitation for Zhongshan Civil Convention on Civilization" closed on May 15. Up to 200,000 citizens participated in the voting and selected the 84-Chinese-character "12 NOs" as the Zhongshan Civil Convention on Civilization. Entries included "kind and no indifference" and "honest and no cheating". These and others were selected as the vision for best expressing the future tone of civilization in the city.

How can the convention be publicized and best put it into practice? Peng Xiaoxin, Director of the Zhongshan Civilization Office, advised that, first of all, more publicity is needed, wherein the communication should be made in a targeted, declassified, and objective-oriented way to make the convention known to every citizen in its preferred forms.

Furthermore, social organizations, associations, communities, villages, and housing estates should be mobilized to promote and classify conventions of industries, villages, neighborhoods, and communities based on their own characteristics.

Moreover, efforts should be made in civilized dining, transportation and tourism. These and other areas should be developed to make the convention known and practiced by all citizens in their daily lives.

On the afternoon of May 15, Zhongshan's on-line public opinion platform, the "Talk on Hot Issues" program, invited social scientists and representatives of resident, media and student to talk about the convention. All the guests considered the convention reflects local concerns. But they also agreed that putting the convention into practice and making the vision come true still need a joint effort and participation from all sectors of society.
