Gangyuan Village is located at the center of the old market town in Shaxi. It consists of two natural villages, Gangtou and Tayuan. Gorgeous buildings can be seen across Gangyuan Village. However, they won't be there without Wu Shun Him's contribution.

According to the villagers, Wu Shun Him, born 1941 in Macao, is a fellow villager of Gangyuan Village. Over the years, Wu followed elder generations' instruction and has been devoted to public welfare in his hometown. He has donated many cultural and educational facilities, and made charitable contributions to many activities to help the elderly in the village.

The imposing, antique-style Wu Shun Him Benevolent Hall is an activity venue for the aged. It has function rooms such as table tennis room and chess and cards room, and it was contributed by Wu Shun Him in 2001 with a donation of 1.9 million yuan.

"Mr Wu attaches greatest importance to education," said Hu Runan, secretary of the village. In 1994, when he returned to the village and saw the dilapidated school buildings, Wu Shun Him immediately made a promise to donate 4 million yuan for rebuilding Gangyuan Primary School. After completion, Gangyuan Primary School measures up to first-class school standards of Zhongshan.

According to statistics, Wu Shun Him's charitable donations to Gangyuan Village have exceed 20 million yuan in these years.

Hu Dachuan, director of the village overseas Chinese association, said Mr Wu specially drew up a written entrustment two years ago, claiming that his children would continue support to Gangyuan village.

On October 10, 2018, villagers unveiled an honorary room on the first floor of the benevolent hall to express their respect and appreciation to Wu Shun Him.

Wu Shun Him also made generous contributions to Zhongshan's philanthropy for years. In 1994, for example, he donated some 5 million yuan for the construction of the Bo'ai Hospital.

Meanwhile, Mr Wu has persisted in doing good deeds in many places, such as Macao, Zhongshan and Tibet, with a total donation of hundreds of million yuan. "Money is taken from society, so it should be used for society," Wu Shun Him once said in an interview. "I will continue to support charitable cause in the rest of my life."
