Air quality in Zhongshan constantly improves.

The Ministry of Ecology and Environment recently released the national ecological environment report for the first half of 2019. Zhongshan ranked among the top 10 cities in air quality, as well as 4th in water environment quality improvement nationwide and 1st province-wide.

In addition, from January to July 2019, Zhongshan's water environment quality ranked 9th in Guangdong, up five places over the same period last year, and its water environment quality improvement ranked first in Guangdong.

Zhongshan has seen good air quality and greatly improved water environment quality due to its various measures adopted.

An important measure to locate the cause of air pollution and improve the precision of air pollution control is to set up micro air monitoring stations in key areas to form a high-density atmospheric grid monitoring system.

"Micro stations can accurately monitor sources of atmospheric pollutants. Currently, Zhongshan has 300 stations. In view of the prominent ozone pollution problems in Zhongshan, monitoring devices of volatile organic compounds were specially installed at 60 stations in key areas," explained Chen Zilin, a staff member of the Atmosphere and Climate Response Department of Zhongshan Ecology and Environment Bureau (ZEEB).

In terms of daily river water quality monitoring, since 2017, the ZEEB has entrusted a third-party monitoring institution to carry out quarterly water quality control which covers 1,041 rivers in Zhongshan. It also requires that the ranking of the water environmental quality of each town and district should be released on a regular basis, so as to ensure the implementation of the "river chief system" through normalized supervision.

Furthermore, Zhongshan invested 350 million yuan in building an automatic monitoring platform for river water quality. A total of 259 automatic monitoring stations were set up in the main rivers of 15 river basins in Zhongshan to comprehensively monitor the river water quality in real-time.
