In order to understand citizens' reading needs, the Publicity Department of the Zhongshan Municipal Party Committee and the Zhongshan Investigation Team of the National Bureau of Statistics recently conducted a special investigation.
The investigation conducted a questionnaire survey on 3,450 citizens. The results showed that the average annual reading quantity of the interviewees was 14.1 books (including paper reading and electronic reading, excluding student's textbooks and reference books), exceeding the provincial average (11.2 books).
Nearly half of the interviewees were not satisfied with their reading quantity, and the public had a strong potential demand for increasing reading quantity.
According to the survey, the average collection of books for a family in Zhongshan was 75.1. Among them, 56.7% of the interviewees had less than 50 books in their families, and 5.2% had more than 200.
In 2019, the average annual public expenditure on traditional reading formats was 280.4 yuan. About 42.2% of the interviewees increased their expenditure on books compared with previous years.
Digital reading accounted for an increasing proportion. About 61.8% of the interviewees said they prefer digital reading.
Interviewees under 18 years old and over 45 years old preferred traditional reading, while those aged from 19 years old to 35 years old liked digital reading more.
