At present, 4 earthquake early warning information receivers have been set up in Dongfeng Middle School, Guishan High School, Shiqi High School and Jucheng Elementary School in Zhongshan. By the end of 2022, another 800 terminals of this kind will be installed in densely populated areas including schools and hospitals.

These receivers are designed to function as an early warning for earthquakes, emergency calling device, natural disaster recording equipment, instant alarm warning system, and science popularization and dissemination tool.

When an earthquake occurs, early warning terminals closest to the epicenter will receive the earthquake signal and trigger the rapid detection system to estimate the time, the location, type of earthquake and the magnitude. These parameters can be used to simulate the intensity of the earthquake in relevant areas. Then corresponding early warnings can be sent to different areas according to simulation results.

Areas within 50 kilometers from the epicenter will receive early warnings less than 10 seconds before the arrival of the first impact. Areas within 90 to 100 kilometers will receive early warnings about 20 seconds in advance.
