According to the Guangdong Province Seventh National Population Census Bulletin, Zhongshan in 2020 has a total of 4,418,060 permanent residents, some 1,297,176 more than in 2010, with a ten-year growth of 41.56%. The population growth of Zhongshan was higher than that of Guangdong Province (20.81%), ranking 4th provincewide, behind only Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Guangzhou.

In terms of age, among the population in Zhongshan, 15.69% were 0-14 years old, 75.44% were 15-59 years old, and 8.87% were 60 years old or above. And the sex ratio was 117.12.

In terms of educational status, there were 13,356 college-educated people per 100,000 in Zhongshan, 5,581 more than in 2010.

Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Foshan, Dongguan, Huizhou and Zhongshan saw their permanent population increase by more than 1 million over the last 10 years, with a total increase of 20.4063 million people, accounting for 94.00% of the province's permanent population growth.
