A draft of the Zhongshan Arterial Highway Network Plan (2020-2035) is currently being published.

According to the draft, Zhongshan will build 14 new expressways to form an expressway network connecting "vertically and horizontally". The planned total mileage is about 418.6 kilometers, with a paved density of 23.5 kilometers/100 square kilometers. The expressways will have from 6 to 10 lanes and the speed limits will vary from 100 km/h to 120 km/h.

According to the draft, there will be at least 3 expressways connecting Zhongshan with neighboring cities in the GBA and at least another 3 expressways connecting the central city with other towns and districts. The expressways make travel from the central city of Zhongshan to the central areas of neighboring cities in the GBA more convenient with travel times within an hour.

In addition, in terms of main road construction, there will be a network of 14 main highways, a sub-network of 20 sub-highways for the traffic among different areas of the city, and 38 linking roads for the traffic among neighboring towns and districts, important transportation hubs, and major tourist areas.
