Pipe section E32, the first ultra-wide, variable pipe section of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge's immersed tunnel, was installed on August 30 and successfully connected with the weir section tunnel on the East Artificial Island located to the south of Shenzhen Baoan Airport.

The immersed tunnel of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge consists of 32 immersed pipe sections and 1 final joint. Pipe section E32 is 123.8 meters long and the cross-section widths vary from 53.6 meters to 55.46 meters. It is 10.6 meters tall and weighs about 68,000 tons after it is filled with concrete.

At present, 11 immersed pipe sections have been installed on the west side of the tunnel connecting to the West Artificial Island; On the east side of the tunnel connecting to the East Artificial Island, the first immersed pipe section has just been placed. It is estimated that the East and West Artificial Islands will connect with each other across Lingdingyang Estuary through a 6.8-km underwater tunnel by 2023.

Following the successful installation of the first pipe section on the east side of the tunnel, the construction of the main structure of the East Artificial Island will commence soon.
