Guangdong Provincial Communication Group announced on September 1 that project announced that as the last prefabricated box girder was erected, the whole Guangzhou-Zhongshan-Jiangmen Expressway has been joined up, laying the foundation for its opening to traffic by the end of 2021.
Construction for the fourth phase of the project was on the combined highway-railway bridge, named Xijiang River Grand Bridge, with a total length of 3.23 kilometers. The upper level of the bridge is a highway and the lower one is for railway use.
The Guangzhou-Zhongshan-Jiangmen Expressway serves as an important part in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area highway network, spanning 67 kilometers in length. It passes through Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhongshan and Jiangmen cities and is interconnected to 10 other expressways including the Foshan-Kaiping Expressway, the Jiangmen-Zhaoqing Expressway, and the Guangzhou-Zhuhai West Expressway.
