Guangdong Transportation Group announced on June 20 the completion of the main structure of the east artificial island of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge, or the Shenzhong Link, following concrete pouring in the roof of the final section of the main tunnel. China's first underwater highway interchange is taking shape.
The east artificial island is located to the south of Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport and close to Fuyong Ferry Terminal. It has a land area of 343,800 square meters, equivalent to 48 international standard football fields in size.
Tunnels, rescue wharfs, power supply and distribution buildings and other auxiliary facilities are constructed on the island, including a 480-meter weir tunnel, an 855-meter main tunnel, and four ramp tunnels for traffic transition.
Via the east artificial island, vehicles can travel eastward to Huizhou and Shenzhen's Longgang District, westward to Zhongshan and Zhuhai, northward to Guangzhou and Dongguan, and southward to Shenzhen's Qianhai and Hong Kong, and a one-hour life circle will form among key cities in the Greater Bay Area.
