Phase two of the expansion project of Zhongshan Overseas Chinese Secondary School started recently. The project covers an area of 640,77.39 square meters, with a total investment of 390 million yuan. It is expected to complete construction in January 2022 and to be put into use in September 2022.
The expansion project has two sites: the former playground area (about 13,000 square meters) and the existing artificial lake (about 11,000 square meters).
The former playground will be rebuilt into the Choi Kai-yau Science Building, including a new library and a new laboratory building. On September 10, 2018, Jonathan Choi Koon-shum, chairman of the school board, donated 10 million yuan to Zhongshan Overseas Chinese Secondary School on behalf of the Hong Kong-based Sun Wah Group for the procurement of new laboratory facility equipment. The school will name the new laboratory building after his father Choi Kai-yau.
The artificial lake will be removed and rebuilt into a new school gymnasium (with a standard swimming pool), an art building, two underground parking garages and air-raid shelters, a stadium broadcast booth, corridors, and the north gate of the school. After completion, the school will enjoy a unique open-ended layout, so that the resources in the school can be shared with society.
In addition to installing new facilities, the expansion project will also renovate and upgrade existing facilities. For example, buildings inside will be interconnected by sheltered corridors, so the entire teaching area will form an uninterrupted transportation system.
Vice-principal Lin Zifu said that as of September 2020 there are 94 classes of 4,911 students in the school. After the expansion project completes, the school can provide quality eduction for 1,340 more students.
