Looking over old photos, Hu Wenjian, 51, recalls his first experience working as a volunteer on the street as if it were yesterday.

At the beginning of 1988, Zhongshan, which had just been upgraded to a prefecture-level city, planned a charity parade campaign with the theme of "Joy, Peace, Prosperity and Development"  through the initiative of a group of cultural workers. Hu Wenjian, league branch secretary of Class 5, Grade 3 at Zhongshan No.1 Middle School, who was on winter vacation at that time, organized a group of students to raise money through a charity sale along the streets for several days.

After the first 30 social youth volunteers were seen in 1988, the cause of volunteer service in Zhongshan has expanded in over 30 years with the development of the city. Staristics of the "Volunteer Zhongshan" platform show that as of February 10, 2022 there are 1,013,348 registered volunteers in Zhongshan, and volunteer service has become part of life for Zhongshan residents.
