Walking into Torch Development Zone's Dahuan Village in autumn, one can see many gray, old overseas Chinese houses telling stories of the bygone times.
Built in the late Yuan Dynasty, Dahuan Village has a long history of more than 600 years. According to a study on the historical development of coastal villages in Guangdong, Dahuan Village was built by ancient fishermen who mostly made a living by fishing and farming. Starting the late Qing Dynasty, a large number of villagers sought a livelihood in the United States, Canada, Australia, Chile, Cuba and other countries. There are more than 1,000 Chinese expats from Dahuan Village living around the world.
Dahuan Village is also the hometown of Lyu Wencheng, who is known as the most distinguished composer and performer of Cantonese music since the 1920s and one of the most outstanding singers and innovators of Guangdong folk arts and Cantonese Opera.
Since 2021, Dahuan Village has started the construction of a characteristic boutique village based on culture, historical sites like watchtowers and ecological environment. Dahuan village aims to showcase Lingnan watchtower architecture, highlight the revolutionary legacy of Zhongshan, and create a beautiful and livable model village.
