Old granary transformed into hotspot for young consumers

In the riverside corridor block in Shengshi Village, Shaxi Town, there is a mottled old granary. It is now a consumer place offering coffee, lemon tea, quick meals, craft beer and reading space.

This was once a national grain storage warehouse with a history of over 70 years. In 2023, Shengshi Village partnered with Hozma, a local catering chain brand, to revitalize the granary by turning it into a hotspot for young consumers.

"We tried to preserve the original historical charm of the granary by, for example, retaining the mottled external walls, painting the interior walls, and re-organizing the inner space," said Feng Jiarui, owner of Hozma. "We also installed new glass doors."

The combination of coffee, fine food and traditional architecture in the countryside is becoming more attractive to young people. "The food served here is nice for me, and the blended environment of old and new here is perfect for taking photos. We can also take a walk by the river after the meal," said a customer from West District.

Shengshi Village has a total of 4 national granaries. One of them is rented to the Shaxi Shengshi Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe to carry out research activities of intangible cultural heritage.
